March is the month where we celebrate many things including Mother's Day and International Women's Day so I thought it appropriate to feature some inspiring mums and we'll be showcasing them throughout March - hope you enjoy the "March of Inspiring Mums" series!
Today we'll be featuring the lovely Katie Carr who lives in St Albans and has 2 children whom are the namesake of her gorgeous business Tommy & Lottie - a unisex, ethical and sustainable baby clothing and prints which are made in the UK.
Katie designs and draws everything herself by hand, which is inspired by nature and childhood nostalgia. The clothing is unisex and non seasonal so it’s easier to hand down after use helping towards reduce the global textile waste problem. No plastic transfers are used in any of their clothing designs, only screen printing or embroidery which is far better to the environment as well as better quality.
1. Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
After years of working for large companies and gaining valuable experience in retail and marketing I wanted a job to fit around my life as a Mum. I wanted to be available to my kids before and after school but have something that I could create and be flexible around them. I have always been passionate about quality products and nature so this also inspired me to start the business. Making a difference to the world is really important to me no matter how small this includes who and how its made, how well they are treated and paid, what impact the manufacturing the product has on the environment. I also love being creative as that comes naturally to me as I was bought up in a very creative family.
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
I am part Native American
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
1. Be Organised – daily to do lists by household member and for the business.
2. Outsource – both business and house chores.
3. Go to bed early, get up early.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
Don’t compare yourself or your baby to others. Get out of the house.
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
Black, yes I know, boring but it goes with everything.
What’s your favourite activity to do with your children?
What do you like to do for some me-time?
Walk in nature
Thanks Katie for sharing an insight into your world - I love your gorgeous clothing designs and also how ethical your business is, something very dear to my heart with Halia Rose too.
