Our "March of Inspiring Mums" interview series celebrates women who are doing some amazing things, whether through business, a campaign or just being fabulous!
Our latest interview is with Kerry Clayton, a mum of two (aged nearly 4 and nearly 2) who lives in Kent. After spending time in hospital and suffering from anxiety Kerry was inspired to set up her business TT's Studio with a mission to breakthrough the "perfect" social media imagery and create her own business of eco-friendly Mama Merch, supporting Mums who are doing their best every day.
Kerry shares her story and tips on how to juggle real family life with running her business plus questions if Leopard can be classed as a colour?!
Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
I was stuck in hospital having damaged my back and was scrolling through social media. I was sick of seeing endless images of 'perfect' instagram mums whilst I was just keeping afloat. I started designing a range of tops and tote bags with relatable slogans on and created a Kooky Mama line for mums who were doing their best to get through each day. I have now expanded to hoodies, sweaters and a new line of recycled sustainable leather and vegan cork leather earrings. This was to help other mums feels a little bit glam with minimal effort whilst creating something beautiful using recycled materials.
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
I have a joint condition Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and facilitate a mums support group for mums with mental health issues. I suffer from OCD and anxiety (more than 1 fact!)
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
I always worry whether I have the balance right. I'm either feeling guilty if someones waiting for an order or guilty I'm telling my kids to wait so I can work! My sanity has come from my son starting preschool, he goes every day for 3 hours and my daughter normally naps for an hour then. I literally work like a mad man for that hour trying to get as much done as possible!
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
Don't believe social media. So what Sandra has given her kid a buddha bowl with fruit carved into the shape of the alphabet for breakfast and you've thrown some fish fingers at yours. Do what you need to do to survive and cut yourself some slack.
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
Is leopard a colour! Leopard print or coral! They make me feel happy and sunny
What’s your favourite activity to do with your child?
I love snuggling up in front of a movie with them when they sit still! They love play dough and its fun to see what they make!
What do you like to do for some me-time?
Sit in bed with a load of chocolate with crap TV on! Or have a bath!
Thanks so much Kerry for sharing your story and tips with us. It's so inspiring to read that you're business idea came from a time in hospital and that you have gone on to make it happen.
I love your advice about not taking social media too seriously and recognising the imperfect world we actually live in!
