Our "March of Inspiring Mums" interview series celebrates women who are doing some amazing things, whether through business, a campaign or just being fabulous!
Today's interview is with the lovely Lisa Bonner, mum to 3 girls (aged 8, 6 and 4) from Hampshire. She is also an author and runs her business Fairies Away, which she was inspired to set up after her eldest daughter was struggling to get rid of her dummy when she was nearly 4 years old.
She has written a book to support other parents going through a similar situation and more recently has created outdoor activity packs for families to get outside and explore together.
Today she shares with us which colours make her feel confident and how by finding the time for herself, she has noticed the benefits on how she feels.
Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
My daughter's dummy use had been a life long habit and by nearly 4 years old was now a crutch, that they had both depended on through a house move from Spain to the UK, a new baby sister (who cried solidly for 2 years) and a Daddy that worked away a lot. It was an intimidating prospect for us both.
One evening after talking about the Dummy Fairies, India had lots of questions that I didn’t quite have an answer for, so I sat down and wrote The Story of the Dummy Fairies, to try and explain what was going to happen and why it needed to happen. India was totally on board with the story straight away and it made the leap to being finally dummy free a painless experience for everyone! I was amazed and after giving the, very crude book at this point, to a few friends who were also struggling and seeing the amazing results, I was convinced that this could be a valuable parenting tool for many.
I have now created a whole Dummy Fairy Package, from a fully illustrated A5 book (with colouring pages), to the wooden dummy fairy door, personalized elements and of course the bio-glitter fairy dust.
Fairies Away has been in business for just over a year now and alongside the Dummy Fairy Package, I have also developed an amazing Explorer Pack, jam packed with activities to get the kids out and enjoying the nature that’s right on their door step! And there is plenty more to come from this little company who promise magical solutions to parenting problems, so keep your eyes peeled for Fairies!
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
I went to the same school as Sarah Ferguson and she came to visit us when she was still a Royal!! She asked if we had ever found any of her graffiti on our desks!!
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
Lists, Planning and saying YES to offers of help!
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
Listen to your gut, have confidence in your natural abilities as a mother and embrace your Mummy tribe – they will save your sanity!
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
Blues and Purples call to me, I always feel more confident and ready to take on the world when I choose colours that make me happy!
What’s your favourite activity to do with your children?
We love to get out and about, exploring the river, nature walks and arts and crafts afternoons!
What do you like to do for some me-time?
Since becoming a mother, Me-time doesn’t come naturally to me. But this year I have committed to making time for yoga and mindfulness and I’m definitely seeing the difference! A good book under a warm blanket is also a luxury I love to make time for!
