Our "March of Inspiring Mums" interview series celebrates women who are doing some amazing things, whether through business, a campaign or just being fabulous!
Today's interview is with Melanie Brooks. She's based in Manchester but through her two businesses as co-owner of The Lifestyle Box Co and as a business coach and mentor, she connects with people around the world. Melanie shares with us why she swapped a highly successful buying career in a fashion company and set up on her own.
Melanie is as a mum to 3 children (aged 11, 8 and 2) and twin angel boys in the sky.
Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
I’ve always been passionate about products! I completed a manufacturing and design course when I left school followed by a design studies degree. I originally wanted to go into design but soon realised the power was with the buyer. I wanted to create and develop the ranges which led me into a 20 year career in retail buying for big brands. The last 7 years I was the head of buying at Boohoo. It was family life and the need for my own development that led me into the entrepreneurial route.
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
Oh not sure I have any…!
I swam 15 ½ mile for charity in my younger days.
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
1. Plan! Have a big picture plan then break it down so you
2. Focus on one thing from life, business and being a mummy each day. Burning yourself out won’t benefit you or your business in the long run. Taking this approach keeps you consistent.
3. Be Productive – What can you do?
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
There is no right or wrong way. It’s not about being perfect, it's your journey. Listen to your intuition...mum knows best.
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
Pale blues and purples. I do love to wear black but I’ve started to wear more colour since I had my children as it brightens up my day.
What’s your favourite activity to do with your children?
My children are all super active so anything that suits all 3, especially with them being at different stages. Parks, safari parks, beaches, swimming are the things they all love.
What do you like to do for some me-time?
I love an evening out with my besties or hubby to be ‘me again’. Good food and cocktails every few months revives me!
Thanks so much for sharing your story with us Melanie! It can often seem like a scary thing to do leaving a successful corporate career but it's so inspiring to see successful women following their dreams and need for personal development, let alone juggling this around a busy family life!
