March is the month where we celebrate many things including Mother's Day and International Women's Day so I thought it appropriate to feature some inspiring mums and we'll be showcasing them throughout March - hope you enjoy the "March of Inspiring Mums" series!
Today we share the story of Shell Mills, a mama of two littlies (Rocco who’s 4 years and Valli who’s 22 months). She is a lover of fashion, works part time in sales and shares the lives and adventures of her family through her Instagram page shellandthelittlies. She says "we’re lucky to live in stunning Cornwall, which is a great life for the littlies living by the sea!"
Shell uses Instagram to document their days like an instablog. "I post about topics that hopefully relate to many other mamas out there. I talk a lot about my sleep or lack of sleep journey with Valli and what I’ve learnt from both my littlies".
1. Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
I studied Fashion Design at university and have worked in fashion retail and buying but since moving to Cornwall and having a family I now work part time in sales travelling around Cornwall which works around my family and it’s great to get around this beautiful county. I work three days and am lucky that the childcare is split between my hubbie and parents. It’s nice to know the littlies are happy and love having that special one on one time when I’m not home!
It was really daunting returning to work even more so the second time as Valli was so dependant on me still breastfeeding to sleep. We’ve made it work and she settles for Daddy and Nana sometimes easier than for me! We’re still breastfeeding at 22 months and she still feeds all night so it can be exhausting going to work on barely any sleep but I somehow manage to do it!
Please can you share your tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
I have to be organised so I spend Sunday usually cooking up fresh meals and batch them up for the days I work so the littlies have home cooked food ready to go when I get in. It’s hard trying to work and still do everything a Mama does too and I couldn’t do it without the support and help from my hubbie.
What's the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
If I had one tip to a new mum it would be to trust your instincts. Every baby is different and no baby will go by a book. Try to go with your baby and what feels right and own your choices. Just because everyone else may seem to do it differently or a book tells you your baby should be doing this or that. Listen to yourself and do what your baby needs.
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
I’d say my favourite colour to wear is yellow especially this time of year as it makes me feel happy and ready for warmer days! It’s such an uplifting colour! I’ve just bought a lovely chunky knit yellow jumper which I’m loving at the moment!
What’s your favourite activity to do with your family?
My favourite thing to do with my littlies is get to the beach! As you’ll tell from my Instagram we’re not ones for staying in if it’s not raining we like to be out in the fresh air and exploring. We’re lucky living here there’s so many fab places for the littlies to go on adventures like the coasts, woodlands and moorlands. We have our favourite beach we spend most of our days there from April to September (October if we’re lucky!) - it’s a great life for the littlies too!
What do you like to do for some me-time?
I need to work a bit more on getting a bit if me time as I’m always so busy looking after the littlies and with Valli still feeding all night I don’t really get much time to myself other than when I’m in work! I do sometimes just need a few minutes so I take 10 minutes or so to just chill when Hubbie is here just before the littlies bathtime while I run their bath! I always feel guilty doing things for me which I know I shouldn’t! When we do have days off we like to do things as a family so for me that’s my me time!
Thank you Shell for sharing an insight into your life - I'm sure many people can relate to the juggle of motherhood and life, and the honest way you share it in your stories and on Instagram is so inspiring.
